Numismatic Issues
The Central Bank of Argentina has
as its primary and fundamental mission the preservation of the value of the currency,
developing a monetary and financial policy directed towards preserving all the functions
of money, as disposed by its Charter (Law No. 24,144/92). It also has among its faculties
that of minting coins with numismatic or conmemorative value, which may be subject to
different dispositions to the issues of current bills and coins. In the last few years the
issue of commemorative Argentine coins related to important national or international
events has increased notably. Among these it is worth mentioning the Ibero-american
Series, minted simultaneously with other nations, with themes such as the Fifth Centenary
of the Discovery of America (1991), Native Fauna in Danger of Extinction (1994) and
Typical Dances and Costumes (1997); also, the fiftieth anniversaries of the United Nations
(UN - 1995) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF - 1996). The issues of national
interest have been those commemorating the Constitutional Reform carried out by the
National Constituent Convention in 1994 and the fiftieth anniversary of Law Number 13,010
which provided for Obligatory Voting for Women, with the effigy of Eva Peron, who
supported the law which recognizes the political rights of women.
